A Defining Moment

The Day Everything Changed

"Some moments don't just change your career—they shape the way you see the world."

The Dominican Republic • 2003

The reputation I have today wasn't built through advertising, self-promotion, or carefully crafted marketing.

It began in a barn.

In 2003, I traveled to the Dominican Republic with former Olympian Carol Lavell and her horse, Much Ado, for the Pan American Games. At the time, I was only in the second year of my practice, yet I had the privilege of supporting Carol and her horse as they prepared for international competition.

The dressage competition had ended. Carol had earned a gold medal, and we were waiting for the equipment truck before heading home. The jumper horses had just arrived and were preparing for their own competition the following week.

The heat was relentless.

Exhausted from the week, I stretched out on the concrete floor of the barn, hoping to catch a few moments of sleep.

Then someone called my name.

An Unexpected Request

The man standing before me introduced himself as Dr. Tim Ober, veterinarian for the United States Jumping Team.

One of the American team horses was lame in the right front.

Veterinary inspection was the next morning.

Dr. Ober had already completed everything he could from a veterinary perspective, but the horse still wasn't sound.

He asked one simple question.

"Can you take a look?"

There was one condition.

He wanted me to work only on the right front.

Everything else, he explained, was being carefully managed, and he didn't want anything disturbed.

There was no lengthy consultation.

No opportunity to prepare.

Only a horse that needed to pass inspection the next day.

Looking Beyond the Obvious

As I began to palpate the horse, something didn't add up.

The lameness appeared in the front leg...

…but the restriction wasn't there.

Instead, I found significant tension and restriction through the base of the neck, the shoulder, and the thoracic sling—the structures responsible for supporting and moving the front of the horse's body.

For the next twenty to twenty-five minutes, I worked quietly.

When I finished, I found Dr. Ober.

"I think I've got it," I told him.

He smiled.

"Really?"

"Really."

"Well," he said, "we'll just see."

The Result

The horse was brought out to the schooling area and placed on the lunge line.

He moved off.

Sound.

No celebration.

No applause.

Just a quiet nod from Dr. Ober.

"I can take it from here."

That was enough.

The Lesson

That day didn't simply build my reputation.

It confirmed something I had already begun to believe.

The body tells a story.

The place where a horse shows pain isn't always where the problem begins.

Real understanding comes from observing how the entire horse moves together—not treating one isolated symptom.

That philosophy has guided every horse I've worked with since.

More Than Massage

Over the years, I was fortunate to work with Olympic riders, international competitors, trainers, veterinarians, and horses facing some of the most challenging performance issues.

The reputation grew because the results continued.

But what mattered most wasn't the recognition.

It was the realization that understanding the horse requires more than technique.

It requires observation.

Patience.

Curiosity.

And the willingness to listen to what the horse is communicating through movement.

Those principles eventually became the foundation of The Sal Massage Approach™.

Today, my greatest passion isn't simply helping horses move better.

It's teaching others how to develop the same awareness, confidence, and feel that transforms the relationship between horse and rider.

The Philosophy Continues

That day in the Dominican Republic shaped the direction of my career.

Every horse since has reinforced the same lesson:

Understand the horse first.

Everything else follows.
